Fireplaces become a sleek centerpiece to a room

Consumers are moving away from the rustic, Tuscan look toward gas and electric models with clean lines and a contemporary feel, said Don Richardson, founder and owner of Arizona Fireplaces in Phoenix.

The changes started more than a decade ago in Arizona, he says. In 1998, a newly passed state law required new houses to have gas-only fireplaces that would eliminate particulates from burning wood.
